Xanthelasma Palpebra Removal:
Treatment for Xanthelasma Around the Eyes

What is xanthelasma Palpebra ?

Xanthelasma are yellowish, soft, slightly raised patches or plaques that usually develop around the eyelids, particularly near the inner corners of the eyes. They are often referred to as ‘Rice Krispies’ under the skin.

They are usually (but not always) caused by deposits of lipid (fat/cholesterol) within the skin. They are benign, meaning they aren’t cancerous and don’t usually cause any physical symptoms.

Where do they appear?

Most commonly around the:

  • Upper eyelids
  • Lower eyelids
  • Inner corners of the eyes
  • Occasionally both eyes

They can start as small yellow spots and gradually become larger or more noticeable.

Are xanthelasma dangerous?

Xanthelasma itself is benign, but can sometimes be associated with raised cholesterol or other lipid abnormalities. It can also occur in people with normal cholesterol levels. For this reason, someone with new xanthelasma may wish to discuss cholesterol/lipid testing with their GP, particularly if they haven’t had their cholesterol checked recently.

Can xanthelasma be treated?

Yes. People often seek treatment because of the cosmetic appearance, particularly when the plaques are prominent around the eyes. At The Tina Sinclair Clinic we use diathermy (heat) to gently desiccate the xanthelasma. We have found this to be the safest, most precise method.

It is important to note, we are treating the xanthelasma but not the cause of them they me need re-treatment at some point in the future.
