Skin tags are small, harmless growths of excess skin that commonly appear in areas where the skin experiences friction. They are extremely common and can develop on almost any part of the body.
Although skin tags are usually nothing to worry about, they can sometimes catch on clothing or jewellery, become irritated, or simply be something you would prefer not to have.
What is a skin tag?
A skin tag is a small, soft growth that typically projects from the surface of the skin. They are often flesh-coloured but can also be slightly darker than the surrounding skin.
They can vary in size, from very small growths to larger skin tags attached by a narrow stalk. Common areas include the:
- Neck
- Eyelids
- Underarms
- Upper chest
- Under the breasts
- Groin
- Areas where clothing or jewellery regularly rubs against the skin
Skin tags are benign (non-cancerous) and are not contagious.
Why do skin tags occur?
The exact reason some people develop skin tags isn’t always known. They are more common with age and are often found in areas where there is repeated friction between the skin, clothing or jewellery.
Some people are simply more prone to developing them, and they can occur in several members of the same family.
Do skin tags need to be removed?
Skin tags do not usually require treatment for medical reasons. However, you may choose to have one removed if it is:
- Catching on clothing or jewellery
- Becoming irritated
- Getting repeatedly knocked or pulled
- Affecting your confidence
- Something you simply don’t want to have
How can skin tags be removed?
There are several methods of skin-tag removal, and the most appropriate option depends on the individual skin tag, its size and its location.
At Tina Sinclair Electrolysis, skin-tag removal is carried out with care and attention to detail, with particular consideration given to delicate or visible areas.
Treatment is designed to be as comfortable as possible, and clients are given clear aftercare advice to support the healing process.
What can I expect?
Every client and every skin tag is different, so treatment and healing times can vary. During your consultation, the area can be assessed and the treatment process explained to you, including what to expect before, during and after treatment.
Our aim is to provide a professional, discreet and reassuring experience, helping you feel comfortable and informed throughout.
An important note
Although skin tags are usually harmless, not every skin growth is a skin tag. If you are unsure about a growth, particularly if it is new, changing in appearance, bleeding, painful or otherwise unusual, it should be assessed by a GP or other appropriately qualified healthcare professional before considering removal.
